THE FIRST DANCE CLASS I ever took was baton twirling at the Heather Meyers School of Dance in Regina, Saskatchewan. After a move to a small prairie town, I continued with tap, jazz and ballet lessons throughout my school years. Dance became an important part of my life, and I wanted to get to know it more deeply. I came to Ontario for a university dance education, where my courses focused on modern dance and ballet, and also on dance making, performance, and the history of dance and its place in the wider world. With this new knowledge, my appreciation for dance only grew.
When I was a new mom living in downtown Toronto, I was invited to go see something new: an aerial silks recital. The way the dancers climbed, dangled and dropped while suspended from the ceiling by lengths of fabric was mesmerizing. I signed up for classes, and by the end of the first one, I was hooked!
Many courses, workshops, practicums – and moves – later, I have opened my own dance and aerial arts studio in Meaford! I have been so lucky to be able to share my love for dance and aerial arts with the community over the last year and a half, and look forward to continuing to expand our offerings to meet the needs of the local community.
