We understand that many of the dance forms that our studio shares with our students have their roots in Black dance. Jazz, Tap, Modern / Contemporary and Hip Hop originated as African American dance forms, developed in spite of and sometimes in response to historical, ongoing and present day repression by the dominant culture. These dance forms are expressions of resistance in many ways, asserting the full person-hood of the person or peoples practicing them. As guests in these dance forms, we are working towards understanding these contexts and sharing them as part of our dance education. We appreciate the work of Dance Immersion, a Canadian organization that has been supporting artistic work of the African diaspora for the last 30 years, and educating the rest of us along the way. In support of that work, we contribute to the organization's Building for the Future Fund.
We acknowledge that indigenous peoples, including the Haudensaunee (Iroquois), Ojibway/Chippewa and Anishnabek peoples, are the traditional keepers of this land. This territory is covered by Treaty 18, 1818. As part of our studio's work towards reconciliation with the original peoples of Turtle Island, we contribute to the Youth Programming Fund at Indigenous Dance Theatre, Red Sky Performance. This indigenous-led dance company has been shaking up the contemporary dance scene in Canada for over two decades, enriching the milieu with contemporary Indigenous performance that engages and inspires.
